If you're anything like me you love eating breakfast, you just don't love making it amiright? If you don't like making it, or you feel like you don't have a lot of time chances are you aren't eating breakfast as often as you should. I find that when I keep my breakfast quick and easy I am more likely to make it before I head out to work. With the weather here in Canada starting to get colder by the day (#winteriscoming) I find myself staying away from smoothies and granola, and instead reaching for something warmer and heartier like oatmeal. Oatmeal is so quick and easy to make, is super filling, delicious AND healthy so you can't go wrong! It also makes me feel all warm and toasty before heading out into the cold, so I thought I'd share 3 simple ways to make it extra delicious!
Each base is the exact same: I buy a big bag of plain Quaker quick oats that honestly last me forever. I always make my oatmeal using skim milk, but you can use water or a milk alternative if you prefer. I like my oatmeal slightly runny so I add a little more milk than needed. I usually make half a cup which doesn't sound like much but once you've added all the toppings it is so filling! 45 seconds on high in the microwave makes it nice and toasty. Once the oatmeal is piping hot, that's when the fun starts and you can start to add your toppings to it.
Oatmeal 3 Ways
1. Banana, Nut, Chocolate Chip Muffin Oatmeal
I kid you not, this may just be the best oatmeal I've ever had. All you need to make this a ripe banana which I like to cut up in slices and then quarter the slices, some crushed walnut pieces, and some dark chocolate chips. It actually tastes like a banana, nut and chocolate chip muffin! I tried this for the first time today and I absolutely love it. I'll be having a lot more of this in the coming months.
2. Apple, Cinnamon & PB Oatmeal
This is another delicious way to have your oatmeal and is so simple. The night before you simply cut up an apple (I leave the peel on but feel free to peel it if you'd prefer that), and fry it in a little coconut oil with a sprinkle of brown sugar and cinnamon. Once the apple is soft and tender you can let it cool, and then store it in the fridge. When you make your oatmeal the next day just make sure you add some of the apple into the cold oatmeal before you heat it up. Once it's been heated, and it's nice and warm I like to get a table spoon of natural peanut butter and put a big blob right in the middle. The peanut butter melts almost instantly and it is oh so good.
3. Maple, Almond, Blueberry and Chia Oatmeal
It may sound a little odd but I promise you it is so good! Once you've got your warm oatmeal simply take some fresh blue berries and mix them in. The heat of the oatmeal will make them go all ooey-gooey and delicious. Then sprinkle almond slices, and chia seeds on top, and to finish it off drizzle a good amount of pure maple syrup on top.
And there you have it, oatmeal 3 ways. These are such simple ways to get a good hearty and healthy breakfast in before you really start your day!
