{Hygge Hype} 5 Easy Ways to Invite Hygge Into Our Lives

Hygge hype.

Have you seen the word Hygge floating around the internet lately? I saw it again just the other day and thought 'enough is enough', and was determined to find out what all the hype was around hygge.

Hygge (pronounced “heu-gah”) is a Danish word and according to hygge.co is "the art of building sanctuary and community, of inviting closeness and paying attention to what makes us feel open hearted and alive. To create well-being, connection and warmth. A feeling of belonging to the moment and to each other. Celebrating the everyday" and it can be found "around a table for a shared meal, beside a fire on a wet night, making coffee together at work, in the bath with a single candle, wrapped in blankets at the end of a day on the beach, sheltering from the rain at a bus stop, lying spoons, baking in a warm kitchen, alone in bed with a hot water bottle and a good book".

Essentially hygge is taking pleasure in the simple things, being present, embracing coziness and making the everyday magical. So how can we all invite a little more hygge into our lives? Here are 5 quick and easy things that will make your home a little more hygge friendly.

Create A Cozy Glow

Whether it is the summer, winter, fall or spring, candles always set the mood. I love having a selection of scented candles on hand that fit the different seasons. There's nothing quite like a drizzly gray spring day with my lemon tea candle burning in the kitchen. Or a hot summers eve with the windows flung open and a gentle breeze sweeping in while my Tuscan herb candle glows from the living room. Or a cold blustery winter night with the Christmas tree lit and a balsam candle shimmering on the dining table.

Take A Soak

What is cozier than a bubble bath? Run some hot water, add some Epsom salts, light a candle or two, and grab your favorite book and take the time to soak. You could even sneak in a cheeky piece of chocolate to enjoy. A little R&R can go a long way!

Use Your Fine China

...or anything else you keep for 'special occasions' every day. Every day is a special occasion in and of itself so why keep the 'nice stuff' hidden away? Every now and again I will drink my orange juice out of a wine glass, and as silly as it sounds it is such a great reminder that every day is important.

Practise Mindfulness

Did I say 5 easy ways to invite hygge into our lives? Well I may have told a white lie because mindfulness is certainly not easy, at least not at first. Mindfulness is the practise of being present in the moment while acknowledging all of the little things that are happening around you - the feel of the computer keys under your fingers as you type, the sound of water boiling as you cook, the way the cold air feels against your face as you walk outside in the winter. It is the idea of slowing down and focusing on one task at a time, allowing ourselves to fully appreciate the moment we are in.

Less is More

And last but not least, less is more. You know I had to bring minimalism in here at some point. By having less we can discover what matters the most and then surround ourselves with more of that. It also means that we can surround ourselves with the belongings that serve us best which will ultimately lead us to having a greater appreciation and more gratitude for them.

There you have it! 4 easy and one not so easy way to invite more hygge into our lives.

Have you invited hygge in?

Getting Back Into Alignment

Alignment. That is the word my mind had been searching for, for weeks. Something had felt off, something didn't sit quite right, something felt a little out of place, something felt out of ... alignment . It is amazing how sometimes all it takes is for our minds to think of a single word and suddenly and all at once it allows us to see the truth of a situation. As soon as I found the word alignment something clicked into place; I had a light-bulb moment, and knew exactly why I had been feeling like I was in a funk of sorts: I was out of alignment with myself. For me being in alignment means having my thoughts and beliefs match up with my actions and how I live my life on a day to day basis, and somehow as if it crept up on me out of nowhere I was no longer in alignment with myself. As I began to think of all the ways my thoughts and beliefs didn't match up with what I was doing I understood why I had been carrying around this irritable and weird feeling in the pit of m

The End of Slow, The Beginning of Surrender

My third slow experiment is trotting along nicely, and I have come to the realization that these slow experiments are not really doing what I thought they would do. I thought these experiments would lead me to a deeper sense of peace and calm, a more present focus on the moment, a way to really embrace the simplicity of things, but instead I just feel restless and a knowing sense that the year of slow although only three months in is already coming to an end. Instead of being disappointed with this outcome, I'm choosing to be grateful. I'm grateful because everything happens for a reason and the three experiments I have done so far have led me to the realize that this may be the end of slow, but the beginning of something else: Surrender. I have been journaling a lot lately and I find myself often writing 'surrender, surrender, surrender'. Writing those words feels a whole lot like inhaling calm and peace and exhaling anxiety and stress. It is easy to think of sur

21 Things You Can Do In Just 5 Minutes to Savor The 'Slow'

"I don't have enough time" "I wish each day had 48 hours instead of only 24" "I'm too busy" "I'm exhausted" We've all heard and probably used the above excuses for not getting more things done. Time is a commodity and there never seems to be enough of it. However truth be told time is usually not the issue but our inability to prioritize what is important that causes us stress and seemingly 'not enough time'. I have been a slow living enthusiast for a little over a year now. Slow living, to me, means having enough time to still stop and smell the roses. Enough time to appreciate the little things, and take part in the little things. Enough time to make my priorities a priority. Enough time to enjoy life instead of rushing through it. Enough time to savour the sweetness. But despite wanting to live a slower paced life, slow can sometimes still feel busy as Krista from A Life In Progress talks about in her pos
